Join the DC area Friends of Art for an artist talk.

When: Wednesday, February 13, 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM
Where: Korean Cultural Center, 2370 Massachusetts Ave NW

Join Wellesley Friends of Art for an artist talk at the Korean Cultural Center at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 13.

Local artist Julia Kwon will discuss her new pieces on display as part of a group exhibition closing February 22. The talk will begin at 6 p.m.

"Tradition Transformed: Bojagi" features vibrant fiber works that capture the artistry and originality of the traditional Korean wrapping cloth. By transforming an iconic traditional art and craft like bojagi in terms of both style and substance, Ahn, Kwon, and Seo tackle questions of women’s evolving role in society, the notion of feminine art, and experiences of both cultural shock and cultural harmony between East and West. As immigrants with deeply felt roots, they also endeavor to preserve the classical beauty and sensibilities of Korean traditional handicrafts, while staying faithful to their perspectives as modern women capable of transforming traditions.

Julia writes that her work “aims to destabilize pre-existing notions of what it means to be ‘Korean’ or ‘feminine’ by transforming and rupturing standard traditional Korean patterns and color compositions.” Julia and her fellow exhibitors combine traditional sewing techniques and innovative contemporary artistry to examine gender, ethnicity, and the construction of identity.

Come support a young, local artist and learn more about what Friends of Art has to offer! Young alumnae especially welcome for this casual, after work event. Following Julia’s talk we will adjourn to a bar on P St for further conversation.
