Wellesley Friends of Art - Private Tour at the Smithsonian Freer and Sackler Galleries

Join Friends of Art for a private tour of the landmark exhibition that she organized, titled “The Art of the Qur’an: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts.”

Massumeh Farhad ’78 is the Chief Curator and Curator of Islamic Art at the Smithsonian Freer and Sackler Galleries.  She will give Friends of Art a private tour of the landmark exhibition that she organized, titled “The Art of the Qur’an: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts.”  It is the first major exhibition of Qur’ans in the US and features more than 50 of the most important Qur’ans produced in the Arab world, Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan.  The manuscripts, with elaborate calligraphy and lavish illumination, tell unique stories and span almost 1,000 years, from 8th century Damascus, Syria to 17th century Istanbul.  The tour will be followed by a reception with tea and cookies, sponsored by Susie Bennet ‘59.
