Wellesley Friends of Art - Private Tour of the Fred Sandback Exhibition at Glenstone
Wellesley Friends of Art invite you to a private tour of the Fred Sandback Exhibition at Glenstone
Private Tour of Glenstone
September 10 @ 2 pm
Please see reservation info below if you plan to attend this tour. The exact procedures must be followed to go to Glenstone.
Glenstone, founded by the collectors Mitchell and Emily Rales, integrates art, architecture, and landscape into a serene environment that invites contemplation and permits visitors to become immersed in the experience of art, both within an elegant museum setting and throughout the surrounding landscape, where one can see works by such artists as Richard Serra, Jeff Koons, Ellsworth Kelly. The museum, designed by the noted architect Charles Gwathmey, provides a pristine setting for exhibitions drawn mainly from the Rales’ extensive and superb collection of art from mid-century to the present time.
We will enjoy a private visit to Glenstone’s current exhibition, “Fred Sandback: Light, Space, Facts.” Highly attuned to the relationship between art and its architectural surroundings, Sandback is best known for immersive installations made from simple, store-bought yarn. By using the yarn to outline geometric volumes within otherwise empty rooms, Sandback created dynamic perceptual situations and complicated our ordinary way of seeing. As the artist said, “My work is not illusionistic in the normal sense of the word. It doesn’t refer away from itself to something that isn’t present. Its illusions are simply present aspects of it. Illusions are just as real as facts, and facts are just as ephemeral as illusions.” The exhibition features examples of drawing, wooden relief, and both wire and yarn sculpture from each decade of the artist’s career.
